Dear Internet,
I know simultaneous submissions are a no-no, but if I submit a query to a publication and they do not respond, how long must I wait before I can submit the query to a different publication? Two weeks? 1 month? Longer?

I’m a former editor. :) I think a lot depends on the publication, the topic, the editor etc. But 1 month seems very reasonable. We live in a fast-paced digital communication age, and let’s face it… if an email sits in an inbox for one month it’s likely never going to get a response. If the topic is time-sensitive, I’d submit to another publication even more quickly or perhaps write a follow-up email to see if you can get an answer from the first editor. I’ve often said “yes” on that second email. Editors get so much mail, it’s easy to let non-urgent things sit unless a writer (politely) stays in touch.
